Guide to Your Child’s First Visit with a Pediatric Dentist

Going to the dentist for the first time may feel like a daunting task for both you and your child. However, visiting a pediatric dentist in Homer Glen, IL, can help put both of your minds at ease and ensure that your child’s oral health is up to par. Here is a guide to help you prepare for your child’s first visit with a pediatric dentist in Homer Glen, IL.

Before the Visit: Prepare Your Child

Make sure to explain in an age-appropriate manner why visiting the dentist is important and necessary. You can use books or videos to help your child better understand the behavior expected of them during their visit, as well as any procedures that may occur.

During the Visit: Assess Your Child’s Comfort Levels

The pediatric dentist will likely begin with a friendly introduction, as well as an assessment of your child’s comfort levels. The dentist may ask questions such as “Are you okay with sitting on the chair?” or “Do you feel comfortable with me checking your teeth?” You can help make your child more at ease by answering questions in a comforting and reassuring manner.

After the Visit: Follow-Up Care

Your pediatric dentist will explain any follow-up care instructions or treatments that may be necessary after the visit. Make sure to take down any instructions and schedule any follow-up appointments as soon as possible. It is also important to reinforce good oral health habits at home, such as brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. This will help keep your child’s teeth healthy and strong!
