How Do Anti-Reflective Coatings Alter the Properties of Glass Lenses?

by | Feb 25, 2022 | Business

Top Quality Anti-reflective coatings alter how much light passes through a lens. By putting them on your glasses, they’ll stop lights from reflecting in your eyes. Also, they’re useful when designing anything glass. For example, if you were creating a picture frame, they would make it look clear.

How Do Anti-Reflective Coatings Work?

Usually, designers put them on both sides of the glass they’re treating. By coating them with it, light can pass through without reflecting as much. So, it appears to make whatever glass you’ve treated much clearer. They’re also able to enhance the contrast seen through the glass.

Applicable to Multiple Wavelengths

They’ve designed coatings to be specific for a particular wavelength. For example, if you’re trying to limit UV exposure, there are coatings to reflect it. They’ll prevent anything in the UV range from passing through the glass. However, there’s a coating to prevent any wavelength from making it through.

Low Reflectance and High Transmission

Once it has a coating applied, the glass becomes highly transmissive. So, any light shone on it should pass through without reflecting. That way, less than 1% of the photons hitting your lens get reflected. It’s not hard to apply a coat to whatever lens you’d like. They’re cost-effective to produce, meaning they’re inexpensive for customers. You can also put another coat on top to prevent smudges from appearing. If you’ve put it on your lenses, they’ll look less blurry. They’re able to work on tempered glass, too.
